Parks & Playgrounds:

Other: Can the speed limit be reduced near the entrance of Switchyard Park on S. Rogers Street? This is an entrance to the city's largest park and there will be a pedestrian crossing built that will also cross S. Rogers Street, to the park entrance. Currently, the speed is 30 mph, which will be too fast for a pedestrian crossing and the current busy park entrance. Per City Ordinance 18-09, the speed is reduced on Winslow Rd around Allendale Dr. to accommodate for the pedestrian crossing that is near a city park. Other examples of reduced speed near park entrances includes (but not limited to): S. Highland Ave near Winslow Sports Complex and E. Morningside Dr. near Park Ridge East Park.

Resident requested a speed limit reduction near the Switchyard Park entrance. Staff informed the resident that a raised crossing, RRFB, and potential advisory speed plaque are planned at this location. Staff are also reviewing speed limits near parks citywide. No change to the posted speed limit is proposed at this time. Response provided and ticket closed.

Hello Sam, Thank you for reaching out and for providing the examples of other park locations in the city. We're currently moving forward with a raised pedestrian crossing and Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon (RRFB) at the Switchyard Park entrance to improve visibility and improve crossing Rogers Street for park users. We're also evaluating an advisory speed plaque at the crossing to encourage slower speeds as drivers approach the raised crossing. Separately, staff are beginning a broader review of speed limits near parks citywide, and this location will be included in that discussion. While we're not currently proposing a change to the posted speed limit on Rogers Street, we'll continue to evaluate conditions as these improvements are installed and appreciate your feedback as part of that process. Thanks again for taking the time to share your concerns.
