Press Release: Paving South Henderson, Replacing Downtown Curbs, Brightening B-town

Bloomington, Ind. - As the busy summer improvement season continues, the City of Bloomington encourages drivers to exercise particular caution in road work zones. Drivers should respect posted signs and directions from flaggers, and allow for extra travel time in anticipation of delays.

Among the multiple projects underway across the city, the Department of Public Works’ Street Division will repave South Henderson Street from Maxwell to Atwater Monday, July 22 through Wednesday, July 24, weather permitting.  Last week, the street was milled to level and smooth the surface in preparation for repaving (see photo below).  Work on this project is ahead of schedule. As updated at https://bloomington.in.gov/inroads/events, lane restrictions and street closures will be in place at this location. The department updates the paving schedule at this map:  https://bloomington.in.gov/interactive/maps/pavingschedule.

Replacement of curb ramps at West Sixth and Madison Streets is underway.  This project is a continuation of the Downtown Curb Ramp Project to improve safety and accessibility at multiple intersections downtown.  Lane restrictions will occur intermittently during this project More information about the Downtown Curb Ramps Project is available at https://bloomington.in.gov/engineering/projects/curbrampsii

Traffic restrictions are in place on South Walnut Street through August 1, 2019 for demolition and removal of debris in preparation for the buildout of the Urban Station II project.  Grand Contracting LLC has been working with the City and adjacent property owners to collaborate on the logistics as the buildout continues.  Completion date is August 2020.

Lane restrictions will be implemented on West Bloomfield Road from South Patterson Drive to South Adams Street during the week of July 22 as construction of the missing gap in the existing multi-use path along the north side of West Second Street/West Bloomfield Road continues.   Crews will also be improving the signalized intersections of West Bloomfield Road at South Landmark Avenue and West Second Street at South Patterson Drive. The federally-funded project is included in the Bloomington/Monroe County Metropolitan Planning Organization (BMCMPO) Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP). Construction completion is slated for fall 2019. More information about the Second & Bloomfield Multimodal Safety Project is available at  https://bloomington.in.gov/engineering/projects/bloomfield

The Brighten B-town initiative has progressed to Zone 2, where crews are focusing on the Prospect Hill neighborhood.  Since the coordinated maintenance program began April 1, more than 19,513 linear feet of curb have been painted and 11,657 pounds of curbside debris removed.  Additionally, 230 fire hydrants have been painted, 1100 storm water inlets cleared, and 102.5 truckloads of mulch laid. Brighten B-town has integrated the efforts of staff from multiple City departments to deliver upkeep and maintenance services block by block.  Brighten B-town progress may be charted at https://data.bloomington.in.gov/dataset/brighten-b-town-status

Contractors submitted bids July 9 for the demolition of the Fourth Street Garage.  Demolition is scheduled to begin September 3, as architects and engineers work to finalize the design of the replacement garage.  The City will continue to meet with local businesses to discuss the construction schedule and plans for lane restrictions. Plans for the Trades District Garage, to be located to the northwest of the Showers City Hall building just south of 10th Street, proceed with environmental assessments and an identification of the location of utilities. Design work is underway and will be presented to the RDC later this summer.
