I wish your class had invited me to the presentations to hear what you all proposed and provide feedback. The crosswalk was widened, which will allow pedestrians to cross the street faster compared to a narrower crosswalk. A pedestrian bridge might appear to be an easy solution; however, pedestrian bridges require that pedestrians go out of their way (vertically) in order to prioritize motor vehicle traffic flow, and this can be particularly challenging for people who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices. Additionally, a bridge is a significant infrastructure investment. A signal has been considered at this location as well, and it is found to be detrimental to both motorists and pedestrians. Both the Bloomington community and the IU Community focus on creating safe spaces for walking as transportation.
